The heritage, history and structure of Windsor Chairs

The Windsor chairs were developed in the late 17th or early 18th century in the vicinity of Windsor, England.

The splayed strong legs of his graceful chairs are evocative of Windsor chairs in both ornamentation and strong structure. While the turn supports translate into arm-posts, the spokes into spindles. They bent wood to uphold the back and the valuable premium customers acquire the best of the beautiful, strong and lightweight Windsor chair.

The inventor may be was a wheelwright, or a turner, or a farmer. The Windsor Chairs in 1720s were plenty available in England's southern counties, typically painted green, and intended as garden (lawn) chairs.

American Windsor chairs, created predominantly in Philadelphia that were became recognized worldwide.

In 1760s the chairs were become recognized as Philadelphia chairs, induced New York and New England makers to produce better and lighter technique, conclude in the most bold of them all, the continuous-arm chairs.

In America the Windsor chairs were fashionable and most comfortable, and reasonably priced enough as purchased in complete sets of four, six, twelve, twenty-four at an instance. For the prosperous and rich citizens they were an inexpensive way to house large groups; for average individuals a small number of Windsor chairs for the dining table.
